KZN principal and hitman sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of Metro cop

The KwaZulu-Natal Local Division of the High Court sitting in Durban on Wednesday, June 24, sentenced Sithembiso Khumalo (56), a former school principal, and Khulani Cele (48) to life imprisonment for the murder of Captain Zwelakhe Ntombela.

Ntombela was shot and killed whilst moments after arriving at him home in uMlazi. 

He was also robbed of his private and service pistols.

The court found the pair guilty on May 11 May before handing down a sentence this week.

In addition to the life term for murder, Khumalo received further sentences of eight years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm, another eight years for unlawful possession of a firearm, 18 months for unlawful possession of ammunition, and eight years for defeating the ends of justice.

All sentences are to run concurrently.

Both Khumalo and Cele were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
