KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has commended teams from the departments of Transport and Human Settlements for their response to the province’s severe weather conditions.
According to the Road Traffic Inspectorate, snowfall has been reported in the Drakensberg, including at Sani Pass Border Post and Mount Fletcher.
Rain continues to fall in Kokstad, while Underberg is experiencing rain and misty conditions.
Duma said graders are on standby to remove it before it could accumulate to above 30cm.
“More than 170 rooms have been made available at Montclair Lodge to accommodate destitute families. Department teams will respond with agility to severe weather patterns,” he added.
Duma said RTI teams will coordinate possible road closures in snow-prone areas, including the N3 around Ladysmith, Kokstad, Underberg, Harding, Newcastle, the N11, Pietermaritzburg and the N2, to prevent motorists from becoming stranded.
Authorities are also closely monitoring the N3 at Van Reenen between Harrismith and Ladysmith.
The department said road closures will be implemented where necessary to prevent motorists from becoming stranded on the route.
The cold weather is expected to continue for the rest of the week. The SA Weather Service said it will be partly cloudy and cold over the eastern parts of the country with isolated rain possible along the KZN coast into the adjacent interior.
