A 33-year-old Germiston man has been convicted of murdering his father and attempting to murder his mother after allegedly targeting them for financial gain in a shooting at their Leondale home in January 2023.
Manqu Ndimphiwe was convicted by the Gauteng Division of the High Court in connection with the attack, which took place on January 31, 2023, at the family’s home in Leondale, Germiston.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the conviction.
Gauteng NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the accused’s parents had returned home early that afternoon when the attack unfolded.
“As they stopped at the gate of their residence, the accused approached their vehicle armed with a firearm and deliberately opened fire on them,” Mohlatlole said.
Ndimphiwe’s father, Mawethu Manqu, sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.
His mother was also shot, with the bullet entering through her cheek and exiting through her chin. She survived the attack after receiving emergency medical treatment.
During the trial, the State, led by a senior state advocate, presented evidence that the attack was premeditated and demonstrated the accused’s complete disregard for his parents’ lives.
“The prosecution argued that the attack was motivated by greed, submitting that the accused intended to benefit from his parents’ wealth, pension benefits and other assets,” Mohlatlole said.
The investigating officer testified that the investigation indicated financial gain as the motive for the offences.
“The State further argued that the accused displayed no remorse for the brutal attack on the very people who had raised him,” Mohlatlole said.
The case was postponed to September 14, 2026 for sentencing.
Welcoming the conviction, the NPA said the outcome reaffirmed that those who commit violent crimes against family members for financial gain will be held accountable.
“The conviction also underscores the NPA’s commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of serious violent crimes face the full might of the law.
“The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to prosecuting violent crime and securing justice for victims and their families,” Mohlatlole said.
