Two members of the South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit have been fatally shot in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg, while responding to reports of gunfire.
The two officers were killed at about 7.30pm on Friday while they were part of a crime prevention team conducting patrols in the area.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said that preliminary reports indicate that the members were part of a crime prevention team conducting patrols in the area.
“After hearing gunshots, they drove towards the source of the shots, where they were allegedly ambushed,” she said
The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, and SAPS has not yet disclosed the identities of the two officers or whether any suspects have been arrested.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has mobilised a range of police resources to the area as investigators begin working to establish what happened and track down the suspects.
Among the units deployed are Crime Intelligence, the Tracking Team, Crime Scene Management and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.
“The scene is still active,” said Muridili.
