The newly elected board members for the Mowbray Moslem Cemetery were announced on Friday after elections were held.
Nomination forms for the elections were released in May and a total of 53 candidates were nominated for 11 board seats.
The election follows a Western Cape High Court process concerning the cemetery’s governance.
Mowbray Cemetery was established in the late 1800s and is located next to the Groote Schuur Hospital. It is one of the oldest active Muslim burial sites in South Africa.
Independent Electoral Panel of Convenors chairperson Igshaan Higgins congratulated the successful candidates elected to serve on the cemetery board.
He congratulated the new board members and prayed for wisdom, integrity, unity, and strength to guide them “as they undertake this important responsibility of serving our community and caring for the affairs of the Muslim cemetery”.
Higgins expressed appreciation on behalf of the convenors to all candidates, voters, the election committee, election officials, judges of the Western Cape High Court, volunteers, and everyone else who contributed towards ensuring the process was a success.

The designations of individual board members has not yet been disclosed, as these will be decided at its first meeting.
