Brutal murder of elderly couple on farm near Plettenberg Bay

A husband and wife in their 70s were found brutally murdered on their farm just outside Plettenberg Bay on Wednesday night.

The grim discovery was made in Glen Loerie, the Crags, a smallholding and farming area about 20km from Plettenberg Bay, known for its wine estates, wildlife sanctuaries, and outdoor attractions along the Garden Route.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies confirmed the incident.

A 34-year-old suspect has since been arrested and is currently being held in Uniondale.

It is understood that a Mercedes-Benz travelling at high speed along the R339 toward Uniondale was caught on a licence plate recognition camera at approximately 6.50pm.

The vehicle was then flagged on a local security WhatsApp group, prompting police to trace it to its registered address.

There, they found the bodies of the 71-year-old woman and 77-year-old man.

Spies said both victims sustained multiple injuries.

“What followed was a coordinated chase involving both police and community safety structures.”

The vehicle was tracked down and later overturned near Uniondale, where the driver fled on foot.

“The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter,” Spies said.

It is further understood crime scene experts processed both scenes as part of the investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear in court once formally charged.

The motive for the attack is not yet known.
