Minor injuries at the Sonneglans scholar transport crash

Learners were treated on the scene, and some were taken to hospital, after and accident involving their scholar transport in Sonneglans, Randburg.

A children’s transport vehicle, carrying young learners, lost control and crashed on Perm Street in Sonneglans, allegedly after its brakes failed.

The vehicle crashed into the tree and turned on its side, inches away from the Vicmar Place complex’s gate, causing minor damage to the electric fence.

A paramedic at the scene, Adrienne Wilson, explained that the children sustained minor injuries, and were sent to hospital for further medical care. “The driver was also not injured and assisted the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) in contacting the parents. We’ve transported a couple of kids.”

JMPD Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving will be opened at the Douglasdale Police Station for further investigation. “Preliminary reports indicate that the cause of the accident is currently undetermined. Multiple minor injuries were reported, and the affected learners were transported to a medical facility by paramedics, and their parents, for further assessment and treatment.”

Neo Nkhumane, a parent, revealed that the driver reported that the car had lost its brakes, after the accident on their WhatsApp group.

She added that, while her son was okay, she was distressed when she received the phone call informing her of the accident. “I was very scared. My first thought was: ‘Is he okay? Is he injured?’. I was very, very scared, but I’m glad to see that there are no physical injuries. I must just confirm that, internally, everything is fine.”
