A 10-year-old girl was gunned down when armed men kicked open the door of a Kariega shack and opened fire.
The child died at the scene in Hillwacht Road, Kabah, on Saturday night after being shot in the chest, while a man, 20, and a woman, 21, were wounded in the attack.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said detectives were investigating a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
She said the victims had been inside the shack at about 7pm when two to three unknown armed suspects kicked open the door and opened fire.
“The suspects fled the scene but allegedly returned shortly afterwards and fired additional shots into the shack before fleeing on foot,” Janse van Rensburg said.
She said the girl had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to her chest and was declared dead at the scene.
The man had been shot in both hips, while the woman sustained a gunshot wound to her left calf. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
“The motive for the attack is unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation,” Janse van Rensburg said.
No arrests had been made.
Police appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact SAPS Kamesh on 071-475-2294, Crime Stop on 08600-10111, or to submit information anonymously via the MySAPS MySAPS.
