A Limpopo grandfather is expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court for the rape of his granddaughters.
The 74-year-old man was arrested by members attached to the Seshego Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
The provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the granddaughters are five and eight years old.
“According to information, the suspect, who resides with the victims, raped them separately this year (2026). The matter was reported to the police. The suspect, who is the grandfather, was arrested at his residence on Monday evening, August 3, 2026, following police investigations,” Ledwaba said.
Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, condemned the incident in the strongest terms.
“It is deeply disturbing that a person entrusted with the care and protection of a child could instead become the source of their harm. We will ensure that this matter is thoroughly investigated, for children and family to get justice,” Scheepers said.
He said police in the province remain committed to protecting children and they will not relent in the fight against crimes targeting the most vulnerable members of society.
In a separate incident in the Free State, a 29-year-old man is expected to appear in the Zastron Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape.
This after a 24-year-old man from Matlakeng in Zastron was sexually violated.
The provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Sinah Mpakane, said the incident took place on Friday, July 31, 2026, at approximately 11pm.
“The victim was on his way home. While passing a bottle store in Kgotsong, Matlakeng, Zastron, he was approached by a man who emerged from the darkness and threatened him with a knife, instructing him to accompany him to the Lere La Thuto Sports Ground. The suspect allegedly held the knife against the victim’s throat and threatened to stab him if he made any noise,” Mpakane said.
Upon arrival at the sports ground, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim. As people passed by, the victim called out for help and managed to escape. The suspect attempted to chase him but was unsuccessful.
“The suspect is known to the victim. The victim sustained a bite injury and a knife-inflicted laceration during the incident. The suspect was later arrested,” Mpakane said.
