OR Tambo Airport Bust: Five women caught smuggling R5m drugs hidden in shoes, genitals to China

Five South African women were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after being found in possession of drugs worth more than R5 million.

The arrests were carried out on Saturday, March 28, 2026, during a joint operation between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).

According to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the suspects were intercepted while preparing to board a flight out of the country.

“A preliminary report suggests that the suspects were en route to China via Dubai,” she said.

Police said a thorough search led to the discovery of drugs concealed on the suspects’ bodies in multiple ways.

“A search led to the discovery of drugs concealed inside their sneakers, underwear, and private parts,” Van Wyk confirmed.

The five women are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, where they will face charges related to drug trafficking.

Van Wyk added that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement authorities to clamp down on drug trafficking networks operating through South Africa’s major transport hubs.
