KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi and his wife, Umlazi District Director Metu Mahlambi, have issued a joint statement apologising for a controversial leaked video that has been circulating on social media.
The video, which captured a highly charged domestic dispute, the wife is heard making severe allegations against the education spokesperson, including infidelity and the alleged selling of teaching posts.
In the joint statement, the couple clarified that the footage is four years old and was recorded during a private marital conflict. They expressed deep regret that an “intensely emotional moment” has now been pushed into the public domain.
Addressing the specific claims made during the argument, the couple emphasised that the accusations were not grounded in truth.
“We wish to clarify that many of the allegations and remarks made in the heat of that argument were emotional expressions born out of hurt, frustration, and anger, rather than factual representations,” the statement reads.
“They should not be taken as an accurate account of our relationship or of either of our characters.”
As public figures, the Mahlambis acknowledged that their words carry significant weight and apologized to members of the public who were affected or disappointed by the video’s content. They maintained that the statements made in anger created perceptions that “do not accurately reflect reality.”
The couple revealed that they have since worked through their personal challenges through “honesty, forgiveness, and commitment,” stating that they remain together and are “stronger and more united than before.”
Concluding their statement, they appealed to the public to refrain from drawing conclusions about their lives or characters based on a single, isolated incident from years ago, asking for privacy as they continue to move forward as a family.
Despite the couple’s clarifications and remorseful tone, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has yet to release a statement concerning the controversial video or the allegations surrounding it, leaving many questions unanswered in the public domain.
