Bloemfontein man arrested after wife found dead in suspected strangulation

Police have arrested a 38-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of his wife in Grasslands Three, Bloemfontein.

Police were called to a house in the area following reports of a suspected murder.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, officers spoke to a tenant living on the property, who allegedly arrived home to find the woman’s 38-year-old husband highly intoxicated and asleep outside.

Kareli said: “Inside the main house, the tenant made a grim discovery: a 38-year-old female lying supine on the bed, covered with blankets, with blood around her mouth.”

Kareli added that the victim was pronounced dead and initial investigations at the scene showed visible marks on her neck, indicating she may have been strangled.

“The couple’s children were away on holiday when the incident took place,” he said.

The husband was promptly taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of murder. Investigation into the matter continues.

Kareli stated: “The police vehemently condemn all forms of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). A comprehensive investigation will be guaranteed to ensure that justice is served for the deceased.”
