The trial of Darren and Ferrel Govender, prominent security bosses accused of murdering Durban businessman Shailen Singh, took a gripping turn on Thursday as a key eyewitness provided a detailed account of the terrifying incident at Meridian Park.
The court hearing, presided over in the Durban High Court, portrayed a scene of violence that unfolded on December 29 2024.
The Post reported that the unidentified witness, whose identity has been protected by court order, testified to seeing a fair-skinned, bald man armed with a firearm near a white bakkie at the crime scene.
As gunshots echoed through the area, the witness shared his experience of witnessing the incident unfold.
The witness said he heard a gunshot while at Meridian Park and turned to see the fair-skinned, bald man speaking to another man dressed in black.
The witness described how the bald man moved behind the passenger side of the vehicle before more gunfire erupted.
“The fair man got into the BMW and the other man got into a Ford Ranger and drove off,” the witness said.
However, the defence team, led by advocate Mike Hellens SC for Ferrel Govender, worked to undermine the credibility of the witness and pointed out inconsistencies, noting a supposed identification parade where the eyewitness had struggled to positively identify the accused.
The tension in the courtroom was palpable as the defence sought to dissect the contents of the witness’s earlier statements, especially regarding claims that Singh was “covered in blood.”
Despite intense scrutiny, the witness maintained his position, recognising that while he might have inaccurately chosen his words, Singh had indeed visible blood on his chest and clothing following the shooting.
According to the State’s narrative, Ferrel Govender is alleged to have been the shooter, while Darren Govender was implicated in driving the getaway vehicle—a Black Ford Ranger—allegedly motivated by Singh’s affair with Ferrel’s girlfriend.
This trial is set to resume on 17 May 2027, when a new eyewitness is expected to take the stand.
