Found alive: Missing SAPS officers survive night stranded in remote wilderness

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Friday morning that four officers who were reported missing have been found safe.

Warrant Officer Martin Fourie, Constable Lyle Fondling, Constable Azola Mgoduka and Constable Imraan Moosa, attached to the Public Order Policing Unit in Gqeberha, had been deployed to assist with stability operations ahead of the TransBaviaans cycling race.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the members encountered difficulties while travelling back from the deployment when their vehicle became stuck along the Baviaanskloof route.

With no cellphone reception in the area, the officers were unable to contact anyone for assistance.

They subsequently walked to the nearest reserve, where they sheltered overnight until they were found on Friday morning.

Police said all four officers were unharmed and are receiving the necessary attention.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata expressed relief following the successful search operation.

“We are immensely relieved that our members have been found safe,” said Ncata.

He also thanked the various organisations and individuals who assisted in locating the officers.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to all role players who assisted: the SAPS members from neighbouring stations who worked tirelessly, Gift of the Givers, local farmers, private security companies in the area, and the SANDF. Your swift response and cooperation made all the difference,” he said.

The discovery brings an end to an intensive search effort that involved multiple stakeholders after concerns were raised when the officers failed to return from their deployment.

SAPS also thanked members of the public and its partners for their support during the search.

“The SAPS thanks the public and all partners for their support and concern during this time,” Gantana said.
