A Hanover Park family is mourning a devastating double loss after two brothers were shot dead in the same street just seven months apart.
Twenty-five-year-old Clinton Fortuin was gunned down in Surwood Walk, Hanover Park, at around 7.30pm on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
His body was found lying on the pavement with multiple gunshot wounds.
For the Fortuin family, the killing has reopened a painful wound. Clinton’s younger brother, 20-year-old Zaylin Fortuin, was also shot dead in Surwood Walk in January this year.
Their aunt, June Fortuin, said the family was still grieving Zaylin’s death when they were confronted with another tragedy.
She said Clinton had been involved in gangsterism and had stayed away from home for some time, but the family had repeatedly tried to intervene.
The heartbroken aunt explained: “He did not stay with us due to his gang relation.
“However at the time of the shooting, he was on his way home where he stayed in Rywood Walk when he got shot. They immediately came to inform us about the news that he was shot. We did not hear the gunshots.
“We lost his brother Zaylin Fortuin in January who was also shot dead in the same street and now Clinton. They were both involved in gangsterism.
“We spoke a lot to Clinton to get him out of gangsterism because we were worried for his safety and wanted to prevent this. But what I can say is that although he made the wrong choices, he was very respectful, a lot of people can attest to the fact that he was very respectful to others as well and was never rude.
“We are not okay at all. Zaylin has been gone for seven months already and there has been no arrests as yet, police have not made a breakthrough in his case so we are fearing that the same is going to happen in Clinton’s case.
“But I said that we are leaving it all in God’s hands, God will work it out. We are still not over Zaylin’s death and now again we are mourning Clinton.”
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that the murder is being investigated by Philippi police.
“This office confirms that Philippi police attended to a murder scene at Surwood walk, Hanover Park on Thursday 27 August 2026 at around 19:30.
“On arrival they found a body of a 25-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds. Police opened a case of murder and no arrest has been effected at this stage. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.”
