A KwaZulu-Natal police sergeant has been withdrawn from election duty after allegedly arriving at a voting station in a vehicle displaying political-party posters.

In a separate incident a suspect was arrested after allegedly assaulting officers at an Umlazi voting station.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the sergeant was deployed at a voting station in the Mphithini area of Donnybrook when the incident occurred.

“The officer’s conduct is being investigated, and internal disciplinary proceedings may follow” he said Netshiunda said investigations would also establish whether any laws had been contravened and whether criminal proceedings should be instituted.

Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba said police would not tolerate unprofessional conduct by officers, particularly during the elections. The statement read.

Meanwhile, a suspect was arrested for allegedly assaulting police officers at a voting station in M Section, Umlazi, on Wednesday morning.

According to Netshiunda, the suspect arrived at the voting station while drinking and seemingly under the influence of alcohol. He allegedly assaulted officers who attempted to contain his behaviour.

The suspect was arrested on an assault charge, while additional charges relating to possible contraventions of the Electoral Act may be added.
