Nursing student, 19, found dead at Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College

The Gauteng Department of Health has expressed shock and sadness following the death of a 19-year-old first-year female nursing student at Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College in Soweto.

Police are investigating the death of the student who was found in her residence at the nursing college in Soweto on Tuesday night.

The discovery was made after a concerned friend requested assistance to check on her.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said security officials accompanied the friend to the room, where the student was found.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The department said members of the Forensic Pathology Service attended the scene and transported the student’s body to a mortuary for further processes.

In response to the tragedy, the Gauteng Department of Health has activated counselling and psychosocial support services for students, lecturers and staff at the college. Additional support is also being provided to the student’s family.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fellow students of the late student nurse. We ask that their privacy be respected as they go through this period of mourning,” said Mabona.

The department said it was prioritising the wellbeing of those affected by the student’s death as investigations continue.
