A 35-year-old Phoenix bread delivery employee was charged for theft and defeating the ends of justice after he allegedly emptied out his employer’s safe and lied that four armed men had robbed the business.

Gareth Naidoo, spokesperson for KZN Vip Emergency Services, said the man had allegedly robbed the bread delivery company based in Palmview in Phoenix, on Friday.

“KZN VIP Reaction Units were dispatched following reports from an Indian man who alleged that he had been robbed by four armed African men suspects after they had allegedly emptied out the safes at a business premises.

“Following a thorough investigation conducted by our investigative team, several inconsistencies were identified in the complainant’s account.

“Further enquiries and the analysis of video footage subsequently revealed that the complainant was allegedly involved in the crime himself. He had fabricated the armed robbery story,” Naidoo added.

He said all of the items stolen were recovered.

“The suspect was thereafter handed over to SAPS for further investigation and processing. We commend the swift response and diligent investigative work of its members, which led to the successful resolution of the incident,” Naidoo said.
