South African Mint unveils 2026 Martial Eagle coin collection

The South African Mint, a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, has unveiled its 2026 Martial Eagle collection, the second chapter in its seven-coin Odyssey of the Sky series.

The collection pays tribute to the martial eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus), described as Africa’s largest eagle.

With a wingspan that can exceed two metres and eyesight eight times sharper than that of humans, the martial eagle is presented as a symbol of focus, strength and authority.

The collection draws a parallel between the eagle’s natural symmetry and precision and the craftsmanship involved in the minting process.

The Odyssey of the Sky is more than a coin series; it is a celebration of Africa’s extraordinary birdlife and the artistry that brings these stories to life through world-class minting,” said Richard Collocot, managing director of the South African Mint.

“With the Martial Eagle, we continue that journey, offering collectors another beautifully crafted chapter in a series that is fast becoming one of our most distinctive modern collections.”

The 2026 range comprises seven limited-edition coins struck in 24-carat gold and 999 fine silver.

The gold collection includes a ¼ oz coin limited to 1 000 pieces, a 1 oz coin limited to 500 and a 5 oz coin limited to 50.

The silver collection consists of a 1 oz coin limited to 5 000 pieces, a 2 oz coin limited to 5 000, a 5 oz coin limited to 500 and a 1 kg coin limited to 100.

The gold coins feature a detailed close-up portrait of the martial eagle on the reverse. The four fine-silver coins depict the eagle perched on a branch with its wings spread.

All the coins feature the inscriptions “The Odyssey” and “Martial Eagle”, alongside the denomination and hallmark.

A geometric African pattern, a recurring motif throughout the Odyssey of the Sky series, frames each coin. The design represents the connection between humanity and the natural world.

The release also includes two exclusive Krugerrand sets, each pairing an Odyssey of the Sky coin with a Krugerrand featuring a martial eagle privy mark.

One set is available in gold and the other in silver, with both exclusive to the 2026 release.

The martial eagle is also associated with the role of a guardian in African folklore, symbolising vigilance and protection.

The 2026 collection follows the 2025 Bateleur Eagle, the first release in the seven-part series.

With its limited mintages, the Martial Eagle collection continues the series’ focus on African birdlife and detailed coin design.
