Taxi truce tested after two men are shot dead in Khayelitsha

Two men have been shot dead in a white Toyota Quantum in an apparent taxi violence-related incident in Harare, Khayelitsha.

Police responded to a shooting complaint around 9pm on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, on Ngxalanga Street in Zwelitsha, discovering a victim behind the wheel of a minibus taxi.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police found a male seated behind the steering wheel of a white Toyota Quantum, Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Frederick van Wyk confirmed.

“The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel.”

Van Wyk said during a further search of the premises on the same street, police also discovered another person, a male, aged 44, who had also sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“Harare SAPS has opened two counts of murder for investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage.”

Three people have reportedly died within a day after taxi associations CODETA and CATA signed a peace deal and vowed to stop the taxi-related shootings.

Meanwhile, an online video reportedly filmed in Khayelitsha on Saturday shows a man pulling a rifle from a bag and firing at a local shop while women and children stand outside.

A young boy peeps the man’s movements and takes off first before the gunman fires one shot directly at the shop and casually walks off.

A community leader in the area said that he is aware of the video but can confirm that it is nothing new.

“I saw the video circulating online and saw in the captions and comments that it is in Khayelitsha but I am not sure where because Khayelitsha has 13 wards. That thing is normal in our township.

“We do have these boys who get into arguments with the Somalians and target the foreign national tuck shop owners, they tend to do these things. It’s not the first incident, they sometimes shoot to kill.”

Van Wyk confirmed that Harare police station has no record of the incident.
