A 44-year-old man allegedly linked to 34 serious cases, including multiple rape cases, has finally been arrested after years on the run.
Police have finally caught up with a wanted suspect who allegedly remained on the run for years while investigators linked him to a string of serious crimes across Tshwane.
He was arrested by members of the Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation (SECI) Unit in Mabopane on Saturday.
The arrest followed an intensive investigation into a number of cases allegedly connected to Magoa, including multiple rape cases.
Allegedly linked to 34 cases
According to police, the suspect had been sought in connection with several rape cases reported in areas including Klipgat, Ga-Rankuwa, Loate, Mabopane and Moretele.
He is allegedly linked to 34 serious cases, including rape cases committed between 2008 and 2016 in various areas around Tshwane.
Police said the long-running investigation eventually led officers to the suspect in Mabopane.
Escaped custody in 2019
The case took another dramatic turn in December 2019 when he allegedly escaped from lawful police custody.
He had remained wanted by investigators since then.
Captain Tintswalo Sibekoa said the arrest was an important breakthrough in the investigation into serious crimes.
“The suspect had been sought in connection with several rape cases, including cases reported in the Moretele area.”
The arrest is expected to bring renewed attention to the numerous cases allegedly connected to the suspect and provide an opportunity for investigators to pursue the outstanding matters through the courts.
Set to face court
Gauteng police said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to track down suspects accused of serious and violent crimes, particularly those targeting women and children.
Sibekoa said the investigation had been intensive and that Magoa was now in police custody.
“He was arrested by members of the Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation Unit in the Mabopane area on Saturday, following an intensive investigation.”
He is expected to appear before the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
