Western Cape launches Lenacapavir for enhanced HIV prevention

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has begun distributing Lenacapavir, a long-acting medication for HIV prevention. This rollout provides more choices for individuals at risk of infection and brings new optimism to HIV prevention efforts.

Ms. Mireille Wenger, the Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, remarked that the launch of Lenacapavir highlights the ongoing advancements in the field of HIV prevention.

Administered as an injection just once every six months, Lenacapavir serves as a long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) option designed to protect against HIV infection.

Minister Wenger noted that 22 healthcare facilities located in areas with the highest HIV prevalence in the province will participate in the initial distribution phase. Dr. Keith Cloete, the Head of Department for Health and Wellness, further explained that clinical assessments, HIV testing, and counseling will be mandatory for patients prior to beginning the treatment.

  • “The rollout of Lenacapavir represents a major scientific breakthrough in HIV prevention and it brings us one step closer to a future with fewer new infections”, said Minister Wenger.

    Amelia Mfiki, Co-Chairperson of the Provincial Council on AIDS and TB, noted that a twice-yearly injection could be more manageable than a daily pill regimen. She emphasised that individuals now have the power to make educated health decisions and can access prevention methods that align with their lifestyles.

    To learn more about eligibility and the various HIV prevention options available, residents are urged to consult with healthcare professionals at the participating clinics.

    In Gauteng, the Department of Health is further bolstering HIV prevention efforts through a rollout that is currently accessible at 133 healthcare sites throughout the province. “Our health promotion teams together with nurses are providing essential education on how Lenacapavir works, its benefits”, explained Steven Mabona from the Gauteng Department of Health.
