Anele Tembe inquest | AKA’s family says inquest will clear rapper’s name

The family of late rapper AKA has welcomed the inquiry into the death of Anele Tembe, which is expected to begin in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The inquiry has been set down for three days from July 13-15.

Tembe, 22, the daughter of businessman Moses Tembe, fell from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town on April 11, 2021.

AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, and Tembe were engaged at the time of her death.

Speaking to eNCA, AKA’s father, Tony Forbes, said he remains convinced his son did not murder his fiancée.

Forbes told the broadcaster that the inquiry is a crucial part of the legal process and that his family has waited a long time for the evidence to be examined before the court.

“All along, we’ve been waiting for the inquest to happen, so that the facts are put on the table in a balanced way. We are absolutely convinced that Kiernan did not murder his fiancée. And the information that we’ve had has proven that,” Forbes said.

He also debunked reports of new footage and information being obtained on the day of the incident. Forbes said the information that emerged was not new.

Six witnesses, who have since been subpoenaed, are expected to testify during the inquiry.

There has been widespread speculation on what really transpired in that hotel room on that fateful day.

The Forbes family believes this inquiry will also clear the name of their late son.

AKA was shot and killed at close range outside a restaurant on Florida Road in Durban on the night of February 10, 2023.

Seven suspects have since been arrested and are expected to stand trial for the murder in the Durban High Court later this year.
