Elderly couple arrested in Melkbosstrand for attempting to ‘buy a child’

In a shocking case of human trafficking, a couple of senior citizens were apprehended in Melkbosstrand after attempting to “buy a child”.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) were alerted after claims that an elderly couple offered a nanny money for the child she was minding in Table View on Tuesday afternoon.

A complaint was opened with the cops and police put out an all-points bulletin, before they tracked down a car fitting the description in Melkbosstrand.

Officers took a 75-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman into custody and are investigating the claims.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the details of the case.

He reported: “SAPS can confirm the arrest of a 75-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman on charges of human trafficking and attempted kidnapping in Melkbosstrand on Tuesday at approximately 2.30pm.

“SAPS members responded to an all-points bulletin following an incident in Table View, where the suspects allegedly approached a babysitter and a young child and offered to buy the child.

“The incident was reported to police, prompting a search for the suspects. The search culminated in the couple being apprehended in Melkbosstrand.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and further information may be released as the investigation progresses and circumstances are clarified.”
