The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has launched a manhunt for an inmate who escaped from Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng in North West.
The escape occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, when Edward Khomotso Madiba allegedly broke out of the maximum-security facility despite being housed in single cells while facing an additional charge linked to a previous escape.
Repeat escapee
DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said Madiba was being detained in the correctional centre’s single-cell section because he was facing a further charge relating to an earlier escape.
Nxumalo added that Madiba is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, and violating his parole conditions.
“Preliminary information indicates that offender Madiba cut through the burglar-bar door of the single cells. DCS has activated its security detail and is working with other law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the escapee as a matter of urgency,” said Nxumalo.
In response to the incident, eight officials have been served with notices of contemplation of suspension pending the outcome of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
Public urged to assist
The department has appealed to members of the public to contact law enforcement immediately if they have any information that could assist in locating Madiba.
“Correctional Services has also instituted a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape, including the security measures at the facility. This is to establish how the escape occurred and to determine whether any negligence or breach of security contributed to the incident,” Nxumalo added.
