A Mitchells Plain father lost his life in a motor vehicle accident while driving with his wife and eight-month-old baby when a taxi crashed into his car on Saturday evening.
The incident took place on the corner of Merrydale Avenue and Spine Road Portlands, Mitchells Plain around 9.30pm.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, confirmed that the Toyota Quantum with no passengers jumped the robots and drove into the deceased’s vehicle.
“Mitchells Plain police registered a culpable homicide case following an accident on Saturday, 2026-07-11 at about 21:30 at the corner of Merrydale Avenue and Spine Road, Portlands, Mitchells Plain in which a 41-year-old male died.
“According to reports the 41-year-old deceased was driving a Grey Mazda 323 with his wife and child, crossing Spine Road in Rocklands when a Toyota Quantum with no passengers jumped the robots, and drove into the deceased vehicle.
“The 39-year-old taxi driver was taken to the Shadow Centre and afterwards a nearby hospital for treatment, also the deceased wife and baby (8x months old) was taken to Red Cross hospital for treatment. Investigations continue,” Van Wyk said.
When the Cape Argus sister publication, Daily Voice arrived at the house of the deceased, we were informed by family that we should speak to the father of the deceased who was not at home and not attending to calls.
Separately, on Tuesday, Emile Koopman, 39, was standing at a red robot at the intersection of Highlands Drive and Weltevrede Park Way in Colorado Park when a taxi also rammed into him causing his vehicle to go instantly up in flames leaving bystanders unable to rescue him.
