North West cop killed in crash while responding to complaint

Vehicle shortage leaves Pretoria police stranded

A 40-year-old police sergeant died after the vehicle he was travelling in overturned while responding to a complaint in Biesiesvlei, North West.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 25, 2026, involving two on-duty South African Police Service (SAPS) members attached to Biesiesvlei Police Station.

North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said the officers were travelling in a police vehicle to attend to a complaint when the accident occurred.

“It is alleged that whilst driving on a dirt road, the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned,” Myburgh said.

One officer injured
Myburgh said Sergeant Monnapule Richard Modise, 40, was declared dead at the scene.

The second officer, a 35-year-old constable, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He was later treated and discharged.

Police commissioner pays tribute

North West provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams expressed sadness following Modise’s death and conveyed his condolences to the sergeant’s family, friends and colleagues.

Adams also wished the injured officer a speedy recovery and assured the affected families and colleagues of the SAPS’s support during the difficult period.

“Sergeant Modise served the South African Police Service with dedication and commitment for about 17 years,” Adams said.

“His untimely passing is a painful loss to the organisation, his colleagues and the community he served.”

He added: “May they find strength and comfort in the knowledge that his years of service and contribution to the safety of our communities will not be forgotten.”

Culpable homicide case opened

Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
