A car allegedly linked to gang activity had been searched numerous times without officers finding anything before Stellenbosch’s new K9 unit uncovered Mandrax and crystal meth hidden beneath the dashboard.
According to a Facebook post by Stellenbosch Municipality, the vehicle was stopped on the R44 near Klapmuts on Saturday after Law Enforcement received information that it was allegedly being used to transport drugs and firearms.
Members of the municipality’s Tactical Response Unit intercepted the vehicle and brought in Juno, a narcotics detection dog, to assist with the search.
Juno alerted officers to an area beneath the dashboard.
Mandrax tablets and crystal meth were allegedly found hidden there.
The driver was arrested.
No firearm was reported as having been found.
The municipality said the same vehicle had been searched on numerous previous occasions without drugs being found.
The suspect and drugs were handed over to Klapmuts SAPS for further investigation.
The bust is the first reported drug seizure involving Stellenbosch Municipality’s new K9 unit.
The quantity and estimated street value of the drugs have not been disclosed.
The driver was arrested and no firearm was reported as having been found.
