Three suspects are expected to appear in court soon after a police officer was viciously attacked with an axe on Monday morning in Delft, Cape Town.
The provincial police spokesperson, Colonel André Traut, said the SAPS condemned the violent attack.
The incident took place just after 2am.
“At approximately 2am, a police constable was standing outside the Community Service Centre when he was approached by a suspect armed with an axe. The suspect allegedly struck the member on the head, causing serious injuries,” Traut said.
A fellow police officer witnessed the incident and immediately responded, firing warning shots, which resulted in the suspects fleeing the scene.
Police said the suspects abandoned their vehicle and attempted to evade arrest.
“A coordinated pursuit by SAPS members and City of Cape Town LEAP officers resulted in the arrest of three suspects, two men aged 23 and 25, and a 23-year-old woman. The axe believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered,” Traut said.
The injured police officer was transported to a medical facility for treatment and is reported to be in a stable condition.
“The suspects have been detained and are expected to appear in court on charges related to the incident. The circumstances surrounding the attack are under investigation,” Traut said.
