Rest in Peace: 64-Year-Old Mother Allegedly Burned Alive by Her Own Son in Nongoma

KwaZulu-Natal Community Left Devastated After Elderly Woman Dies in Shack Fire

A quiet village in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, has been left in mourning following the tragic death of a 64-year-old woman who was allegedly killed in a horrifying incident involving her own son.

The victim, Thandiwe Shozi, affectionately known by many as Thandi, lost her life after the traditional hut she was inside caught fire in Mampiyampiya village on Thursday, 2 July 2026. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while police continue searching for her 35-year-old son, who is wanted for questioning.

What Allegedly Happened?

According to information shared by family members and community residents, Thandiwe Shozi was preparing food inside her traditional hut when the tragic incident occurred.

It is alleged that her 35-year-old son first asked a relative to leave the homestead to fetch goats. Once the relative had gone, he allegedly set the hut on fire while his mother was still inside.

The flames quickly engulfed the structure, leaving Thandiwe trapped. She tragically died in the fire before anyone could rescue her.

The Discovery

Later that evening, concern began to grow when neighbours realised they had not seen Thandiwe for some time.

One woman reportedly alerted other villagers after becoming worried about her whereabouts. Several men went to investigate and made the heartbreaking discovery.

They found the traditional hut completely burned down, with Thandiwe’s body inside.

According to reports, the suspect fled the scene after noticing community members approaching. Villagers attempted to pursue him, but darkness made it difficult, allowing him to escape.

Family Says Violence Had Been Ongoing
Family spokesperson Bona Khumalo said the tragedy did not come as a complete surprise, claiming the suspect had allegedly been violent toward family members for years.

According to the family, he frequently assaulted both his mother and his sister without provocation, forcing relatives to seek refuge at neighbouring homes out of fear.

The family also described Thandiwe as the sole provider who worked tirelessly to care for those around her despite the ongoing challenges.

Her death has left relatives emotionally devastated and financially uncertain.

Alleged Motive Raises More Questions

Reports circulating on social media claim the suspect attempted to justify his alleged actions by accusing his mother of taking photographs of him without his permission.

However, community members reportedly dismissed this explanation, claiming her cellphone did not even have a camera.

It is further alleged that he later changed his explanation, claiming she had been using the phone’s flashlight to harass or annoy him.

These claims have not been independently verified, and investigators have not confirmed any motive.

Police Investigation Continues
Police have opened an investigation into the death and have launched a massive manhunt for the 35-year-old suspect, who remained at large at the time of publication.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to report it immediately to the nearest police station rather than attempting to confront him.

Community Calls for Justice

The incident has shocked residents across Nongoma, with many expressing grief and outrage over the loss of a woman remembered for her kindness and dedication to her family.

Family spokesperson Bona Khumalo warned that emotions within the community are running extremely high. He appealed for justice through the legal system, even as fears remain that some residents may attempt to take matters into their own hands if they encounter the suspect before police do.

Community leaders have also urged residents to allow law enforcement to carry out the investigation and avoid acts of vigilantism.

Remembering Thandiwe Shozi

Friends, neighbours and relatives describe Thandiwe Shozi as a hardworking, caring mother who devoted herself to supporting her family despite many hardships.

Her tragic death has once again highlighted the devastating impact of domestic and family violence on vulnerable members of society, particularly elderly women.

As police continue their search for the suspect, many South Africans are hoping that justice will be served through the courts.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Shozi family, friends and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.

May Thandiwe Shozi rest in eternal peace.
