The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says it has established a new Strategic Presidential Team (SPT) as its highest decision-making and strategic leadership body. This comes as party president Jacob Zuma dissolved the previous Presidential Task Team (PTT) with immediate effect as part of a restructuring of the party’s leadership.
The Presidential Task Team was established by Zuma in February this year as the MK Party geared up for the 2026 local government elections.
At the time, the party said the structure would support Zuma in providing strategic direction and coordinating the organisation’s expanding operations ahead of the polls.
MK Party national spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu said the Strategic Presidential Team had been established in terms of Section 7 2(h) of the party’s Constitution.
Mahlangu said the new structure would serve as “the highest decision-making and strategic leadership body of the organisation”, providing strategic leadership, organisational coordination and oversight of the implementation of the party’s political programme and constitutional mandate.
He said the decision was intended “to strengthen the Party’s leadership architecture, consolidate strategic authority, eliminate fragmentation in decision-making and ensure disciplined, unified and effective execution of Party resolutions and programmes”.
Mahlangu said that, with immediate effect, the Presidential Task Team had been formally dissolved, with all its powers, responsibilities, mandates and functions transferred to and consolidated under the Strategic Presidential Team.
The party said all powers, responsibilities, mandates and functions previously exercised by the Presidential Task Team had been transferred to and consolidated under the Strategic Presidential Team.
“The Strategic Presidential Team shall, with immediate effect, assume all secretariat and financial powers and responsibilities necessary for the effective administration, coordination, governance and strategic management of the organisation,” he said.
Mahlangu said the Strategic Presidential Team and the National Officials would work together “to ensure strategic coherence, organisational effectiveness, accountability and the successful implementation of the Party’s programmes and electoral strategy”.
He said the Strategic Presidential Team would exercise supreme strategic leadership and decision-making authority on behalf of the organisation, while providing long-term strategic planning and organisational direction.
He also said the team would direct and oversee the implementation of party policies, programmes and resolutions, exercise oversight of the party’s secretariat, administration and financial governance, and strengthen coordination and operational effectiveness across all party structures.
According to Mahlangu, the Strategic Presidential Team would lead the party’s electoral strategy, campaigning and voter mobilisation, monitor implementation, performance and accountability throughout the organisation, and promote unity, discipline, renewal and organisational cohesion across the MK Party.
He said Zuma had expressed confidence in the new leadership structure.
“President Jacob Zuma has expressed his confidence in the Strategic Presidential Team and the National Officials to provide united leadership and deliver victory for the organisation,” Mahlangu said.
He added that Zuma was confident the Strategic Presidential Team, working together with the National Officials, would “strengthen the Party’s leadership capacity, enhance strategic execution and ensure the effective fulfilment of the Party’s constitutional mandate and political mission”.
The MK Party also called on “all leaders, Members of Parliament, public representatives, members and organisational structures to fully support and implement this decision, and to work collectively in advancing the unity, strength and electoral success of the organisation”.
